Awkward silence.

They stood nervously around each other, wishing the other would say something. It was a crisp winters night and they were both covered from head to toe. Another person hovered around them and his presence could not be neglected. In fact at times that is all they would notice. No one spoke but both of them knew he was around lingering. And he just wouldn’t go away. It was as if he had decided to make it a point to ruin their already ruined date.
It hadn’t gone well. No matter how hard they tried they just couldn’t click. Conversations never took off and even though they were at one of the finest restaurants, they had lost their appetite. It saddened both of them because in many ways they both wanted the same thing. They were both at a place in life where another failed date couldn’t be forgotten and ignored. Half way into the date they both realised it was a disaster. The guy rambled on and on about something trivial, out of nervousness. The girl sat quietly and added nothing. What will her friends say when they hear about this? She was the only one who was single now while everyone else around her was hitched. She could feel the pressure from her parents and her friends. She could hear them telling her to try harder and find a man and settle down. She wasn’t even sure that’s what she really wanted anyway. But she no longer had the energy to convince people.
And that’s when he showed up making things worse. It came to a point where the date became unsalvageable. Turned into a sinking ship. He sat there at the table with them, staring them in the face. Mocking them both as they ate their food and drank their wine. They averted their eyes and knew there was no point even trying now. Their date had turned into dinner. Just dinner.
They walked towards the car dejected and sad. Their friends had gone to great lengths to set this up and it went nowhere. Plus why did he have to show up? There isn’t anything he could do once he announced his presence. Nor could she. Any attempts made post that somehow made it worse and worse. They had crossed the point of no return. There was no coming back from this.
He dropped her home and they said their goodbye’s. As soon as she left the car, he was gone too. Disappeared as mysteriously as he had appeared. Dissolved into the crisp winters night. Oh how he wanted to get his hands on him. How he wanted to destroy him with his bare hands and make sure he never shows up again. To make sure he would never show his ugly head again. That laughing, mocking, smug little bastard called awkward silence.
